" The Tree "
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed
Against
the sweet earth's flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
Example of
anthropomorphism:
Joyce Kilmer, American poet (1886-1918). Author
of a widely known poem, The Tree (1913) that pays
anthropomorphic tribute to trees. He equates the
tree, animate object of nature, with a creation by
God on equal standing with humans by
anthropomorphizing its features (a hungry mouth,
leafy arms, hair) and giving it human actions ( that
looks at God, that prays). The poem’s simple and
direct language invites frank admiration of the
nobility of trees, and implies that they are a
divine creation, greater than any creative act by a
man.
